How to analyze Tesla stock

Figures as of 2026-08-31, refreshed automatically every night.

Analyzing a stock is not guesswork — it is a fixed set of questions. Below are the five the great investors ask, answered for Tesla (TSLA) with today's numbers.

1. Is the price reasonable? — price/earnings ratio: 322.9

high — investors are pricing in a lot of future growth.

2. Is it a good business? — return on equity: 4.7%

weak — the business earns little on its equity.

3. Is it financially healthy? — F-score 5/9, debt at 18% of equity

average.

4. What do you get paid? — dividend yield —%

5. What is the trend doing? — price -6.8% over 12 months

When should you buy Tesla?

Nobody times the bottom — the research is brutal on that. What the data does support: buy when the price is reasonable against the company's own history (step 1) and the trend is not working against you (step 5), spread your entries over time, and size the position smaller the wilder the stock moves. Historically the average investor lost most by buying at peak attention — not by misreading a number.

When should you sell?

Three reasons survive scrutiny: the thesis you bought is broken (fundamentals deteriorating structurally), the position has grown too large for your diversification (rebalance), or you need the money on a planned date. 'The price dropped' is not by itself a reason — drawdowns are part of owning stocks, and selling after the fall has historically been the most expensive moment.
